LAURENT BROCHARD, MD, HDR

Director – Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine, University of Toronto
Dr. Laurent Brochard is an Intensivist and Clinician Scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital (Unity Health Toronto) and Director of the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Toronto. He holds the Keenan Chair in Critical Care and Acute Respiratory Failure. After training in respirology and critical care and obtaining his MD from the University of Paris, he worked in Paris and at Geneva University Hospital. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of Intensive Care Medicine, currently serves as Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and has published over 700 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Burns is a respirologist, intensivist, and epidemiologist practicing critical care medicine at Unity Health Toronto (St. Michael’s Hospital). She is a Professor of Medicine and Clinician Scientist at the University of Toronto and a Scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. Dr. Burns’ research focuses on strategies to wean, extubate, and support critically ill patients with noninvasive respiratory support strategies after extubation. In addition, she evaluates strategies to advance research methodology and improve consent processes, recruitment. and patient and family engagement in clinical trials. As Past Chair of the ATS Women in Critical Care Working Group, she is an advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion. She is the immediate Past President of the Canadian Critical Care Society and an executive member of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group.

CLAUDIA C DOSSANTOS, MD, MSc, FRCPC
Associate Professor - Department of Medicine, University of Toronto
Dr. Claudia DosSantos is a Professor of Medicine at the Temerty Faculty, affiliated with Unity Health Toronto, where she serves as a critical care intensivist. She holds the Pitts Research Chair in Acute Care and Emergency Medicine and leads a world-class translational molecular critical care research program. Her work focuses on patient discovery, in-vitro research, and pre-clinical studies. Notably, she co-directs CRAFT, a research collaboration that developed the Diagnostics Horizons Lab, and spearheads the Critical Care Medicine Biobank. Dr. dos Santos co-founded North-MiRs, pursuing RNA-based therapies for sepsis and acute respiratory distress, now advancing to Phase 1 clinical testing.

JAN FRIEDRICH, MD, PhD, MSc

Jan Friedrich is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and Medical Director of the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit and a practicing academic critical care physician at Unity Health Toronto-St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. He has a background in clinical epidemiology and research interests include meta-analysis and development of meta-analytic techniques, and treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis and acute renal failure in ICU patients.

​Dr. Goffi is an intensivist and co-director of the St. Michael's Hospital Adult Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. He is also the co-lead of the University of Toronto Critical Care Ultrasound Curriculum. His interests include neurocritical care, critical care ultrasound and optimal strategies for effective teaching.

DAVID HALL, MD, PhD, FRCPC

Dr. Hall is a Clinician Teacher. He practices Critical Care and Respiratory Medicine and is Director of the Adult Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Clinic. He has held may roles in education including former education site lead for both Respirology and Critical Care Medicine at St Michael’s Hospital, former pre-clerkship Block lead for Respiratory Medicine, and Program Director for Adult Critical Care medicine (2017-2023).

DAVID J. KLEIN, MD, FRCP(C), MBA

Associate Professor - Faculty of Medicine and Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto
Dr. David J. Klein is an academic critical care physician at St. Michael’s Hospital and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. He has authored over 50 articles in renowned journals like JAMA and BMJ, focusing on sepsis diagnostics and nutrition in critical illness. A keynote speaker at global conferences, he shares insights on care. In addition to his expertise, Dr. Klein has extensive knowledge in healthcare business, finance, and policy. He is an audit board member for Ontario's Health Sector, appointed by the Treasury Board Secretariat, and has conducted research on healthcare investments, collaborating with various organizations in both public and private sectors.

WARREN L. LEE, MD, PhD
Associate Professor - Medicine, Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology
Dr. Lee received his M.D. and completed residencies in Internal Medicine, Respirology, and Critical Care Medicine in Toronto. He then completed a PhD in Medical Sciences in the Program in Cell Biology at the Hospital for Sick Children, followed by postdoctoral training in Microbiology and Immunology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. His research focuses on the mechanisms of endothelial permeability, with specific interest in developing therapeutic approaches to vascular leakage during lung injury/sepsis and understanding the mechanisms of atherosclerosis.

Dr. Nava Maham is an attending critical care physician in the Medical Surgical and Trauma Neurosurgical Intensive Care Units at St. Michael's Hospital, Unity Health. She is co-lead of Education for the Critical Care Department. Dr. Maham has a master's degree in quality improvement and patient safety. Her areas of interest are improving the care of mechanically ventilated patients and quality improvement education.​

Dr. Michael Sklar practices critical care medicine in general medical surgical ICU, trauma and neurosurgical ICU and attends on the critical care outreach teams. He also attends in the operating rooms at St. Michael's Hospital. His research interests include critically ill patients with respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, and extracorporeal life support. Dr. Sklar holds a CIHR fellowship to study the pathophysiology of respiratory failure in critically ill adult patients.

NATALIE WONG, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Wong is an internist and critical care physician at St. Michael’s Hospital. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto and Deputy Physician-in-Chief for Medicine at St. Michael’s. Dr. Wong is a clinician teacher who enjoys uses high fidelity simulation for training cardiac arrest and critical care teams. She currently holds the position of Director for the cardiac resuscitation educational program and Chairs the cardiac arrest committee. She developed a cardiac arrest database that serves to inform the training and quality improvement for resuscitation teams at St. Michael’s.

FRANCOIS MATHIEU, MD

Dr. François Mathieu completed his medical training (2015) and neurosurgery residency (2021) at the University of Toronto, followed by a clinical fellowship in critical care medicine (2023). He spent one year completing a master’s in clinical neurosciences under the supervision of Professor David Menon at the University of Cambridge (2018-19), focusing on developing computer vision techniques to analyze the vast amount of neuroimaging data gathered as part of the CENTER-TBI study. He returned to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in 2023 to acquire additional expertise in multimodal neuromonitoring in patients with an acute brain injury, before joining the St-Michael’s Hospital critical care team. His research interests include the use of advanced neuroimaging and neuromonitoring to individualize prognostication and therapies in traumatic brain injury.

ANTOINE PRONOVOST, MD

Dr. Antoine Pronovost earned his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 2001 and completed his residency in Anaesthesia and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Toronto in 2006 and 2008, respectively. He holds an MBA from the Rotman School of Management (2005) and is accredited in Evidence-based Design. Since joining St. Michael's Hospital in 2008, he has focused on process improvement in healthcare and enhancing communication tools in critical care. As Chair of the Trauma and Neurosurgery Program Knowledge Translation Committee, he develops strategies for improving patient care, including standardized documentation and communication during resuscitation. He has been the Medical Director of Trauma and Neurosurgical Intensive Care since 2010.

ANDREA RIGAMONTI, MD, FNCS

Dr. Andrea Rigamonti is an anesthesiologist and intensive care physician at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. He completed his medical degree and Anesthesia and Critical Care residency at the University of Milan, followed by a research fellowship at the Université de Montréal and a clinical fellowship in neuro-anesthesia and neuro-critical care at the University of Toronto. As Medical Director of the Trauma Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit and Neuro-Anesthesia Lead, his research focuses on multimodal neuromonitoring, cerebrovascular pathophysiology after traumatic brain injury, and awake craniotomy anesthetic management. He also directs the Trauma-Neuro Anesthesia and Critical Care Fellowship at St. Michael’s.
